Clone archives and gene banks are set up to preserve our cultivated plants. Genetic variation is a requirement for sustainable farming and horticulture in the future. In clone archives (reproduction by the same specimen) propagation is achieved by cuttings or grafting.
The clone archive of the Bergius Botanic Garden was created in 1981 and is funded by NordGen and the Bergius Foundation. Around 45 apple trees and some pear trees form the basis of the clone archive in the Bergius Botanical Garden. A collection of Salix is also found here.
